Run, Fatgirl, Run: The Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon

April 27th, 2009 by Jessika

This past Sunday was the culmination of all my training and goals. I had worked hard since January, completed a 10K along the way, and….I can say that I finished all 13.1 miles.

It sucked though. Really badly. First, I didn’t have more than four 3 mile runs after the 10K due to an IT Band/Bursitis injury. The worst part though was getting a stomach bug on Saturday. I spent the day on the couch and at the toilet, not keeping anything down but small sips of water until later that evening. Let me tell you that running a half marathon on nothing but half a bowl of Ramen noodles isn’t fun.

But I kept my goal of finishing. I ran slowly when I did run, and walked the rest, making sure to get water at every opportunity. The various things that kept me going were picturing Simon Pegg pushing through in Run, Fatboy, Run, and knowing that my hubby and Baby Grrl were waiting for me at the finish line. That was really great to see them during the last push and have Baby Grrl say “Mommy!” and reach for me after I was done. Made it all worth it. I’m glad I did it, even with all the pain and misery. It gives me a time to beat for next year if nothing else! My pace was a full 4 min per mile slower than I usually run, which gave me a 3:26:24 time. Something I can easily beat if I keep up with running and don’t get a stomach bug before the race.

Onward I’m looking at doing a few 5Ks and maybe a 10K or two through the year. After I get the all clear from the PT and doc that I can get back into running anyway. (Hopefully in a short 2 - 3 weeks!) Gotta make sure the hip is fully healed so I don’t sideline myself for an even longer time!

Right now though I’m just glad to rest my sore legs. Ow.

Do You Realize Oklahoma politicians are douchebags??

April 24th, 2009 by Jessika

The Flaming Lips, one of the few awesome things to be proud of in Oklahoma, won a popular vote to have their song “Do You Realize??” as the state’s official rock song. To make it, er, official, the Oklahoma House needed to pass a resolution, which in turn would be signed by Governor Henry. Yesterday was the vote, but thanks to idiot lawmakers, it failed to get the required votes. The reason?

Rep. Corey Holland, R-Marlow, debated against the resolution, saying he was bothered one of the band members wore a red T-shirt with a yellow sickle and hammer on it when The Flaming Lips came last month to the Capitol when results of an online voting contest showed their song to be the clear-cut winner. “I was really offended by that,” Holland said.

Rep. Mike Reynolds, R-Oklahoma City, also spoke against the measure, saying the band has a reputation for using obscene language, recalling band members used offensive language several years ago when the city of Oklahoma City named an alley after the band. “Their lips ought to be on fire,” Reynolds said.

Nice. The horrible shirt in question?

Lips

I know. Such an assault on freedoms, right? But thanks to Governor Henry, it doesn’t matter that the resolution didn’t pass! He’s going to sign it anyway:

“The music of the Flaming Lips has earned Grammys, glowing critical acclaim and fans all over the world. A truly iconic rock ‘n’ roll band, they are proud ambassadors of their home state.

“They were clearly the people’s choice, and I intend to honor that vote.”

He’s been doing well lately, what with vetoing several bills that would have made us even more conservative. (A voter ID law, outlawing stem cell research, and putting more restrictions on abortions just to name a few.)

The Lips were very classy and their manager Scott Booker had this to say:

“As many people around the world know, The Flaming Lips are proud to be from Oklahoma. We want everyone to understand that only a minority of the representatives voted against this law.

“Regardless of what the minority in the House of Representatives wish, The Flaming Lips remain proud ambassadors of the state,”

Rock on!

Run, Fatgirl, Run! The Redbud Classic

April 7th, 2009 by Jessika

Last Sunday I ran the 10K in the Redbud Classic, and my buddy Sarah ran the 5K. It was cool, which didn’t bother me, but what did was the 25 - 30 MPH sustained winds with gusts over 40 MPH. Now *that* made for some tough running.

The good part was that the wind was at my back for the last part of the race, which helped me get a personal best! My goal was to beat my 10K time from 2 1/2 years ago, 1:11:38, and I did! Finish time was 1:10:58. That’s not a huge improvement, but I’m just happy I improved at all, given the strong winds.

Only 2 weeks and 5 days left until my half marathon. I’m both excited and nervous….

I’m a good but lazy blogger

I know this because of a spam comment left on my Ada Lovelace Day post of last week. You know…I’ll have to agree, thanks to family and work stuff I don’t post as often as I’d like.
