Could you do the egg bacon spam and sausage without the spam then?

October 30th, 2006 by Jessika

It was inevitable. It’s the risk you take in having a blog, or even an email address.

On this site, I’ve had some users register that have just done it to plus their porn sites via spam links. But why did they have to do it in the most inappropriate posts? One was in my post about the Girl Toy Rant, and the other was the post with Logan’s picture.

Oh, but talk about inappropriate… Corwin had to shut down the comments section of Logan’s site because people were leaving Viagra and sex adds there. On a baby’s website!

I mean…I know that crap has to work, otherwise they’d not do it in the first place. But come on. Do you have to feel the need to put it in the same places my baby girl posts are? That’s just wrong.

Fighting censorship…one post at a time

October 26th, 2006 by Jessika

People who know me, and even some who may not know me personally thanks to this blog, know that freedoms and civil liberties are an important topic to me. I despise any kind of censorship, hate when people tell me what I can or can’t read/watch/listen/etc, or want to regulate what my kid reads/watches/listens/etc. She’s my child, I will do my job and be her parent. I digress though.

Today I read a story on The Register’s site about a campaign Amnesty International is doing on internet freedoms. They will be presenting a list of almost 50,000 signatures to the Internet Governance Forum who all ask to protect human rights on the internet.

The main thing I did though was to have a banner added to my site that publishes cencored material. Each time a new page loads, you will see a small fragment from someone’s blog/site that their government did not want out there. You can click on it to learn more about what you read.

If you also have a blog and believe in this as well, add it to your site as well. Fight opression and censorship!

Why, oh why do I do it?

October 23rd, 2006 by Jessika

It’s like I’m a masochist. I read a story, click on a link, or read comments that I *know* will piss me off. A story on how people believe the earth is only a few thousand years old, and that Intelligent Design should be taught in the science class beside evolution? Yep, I read it. A site devoted to the evils of violence in videogames & television, and how they should be regulated, basically telling me how I should raise my kid? I’m there reading and fuming.

I am proud of myself though. I usually don’t engage in debate with the extreme views, as tempting as it is to type out a diatribe. Just remember the tasteless quote:

Arguing on the internet is like participating in the Special Olympics. You may win, but you’re still retarded.

girl toy rant

October 17th, 2006 by Jessika

Since the TV in our house is on Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon quite a bit, we see many toy commercials. I half paid attention to them before, noting for a while that girl toys generally suck. Even getting first hand experience when shopping for relatives’ or friends’ kids. Tons of pink, with dolls and kitchen toys abundant.

However, now that I have a daughter, I’m especially paying attention to the commercials. It seems that Bratz and Barbie are the dolls to be had. Remember, fellow chicks, when we were little, and Barbie had a lot of different jobs? I don’t see that any more. It’s all about the accessories. (Yes, it was back then, too. But it just seems more prevalent now.)

The worst offender to me was a commercial for Trollz dolls. Basically the same troll dolls we all remember, with the crazy, fuzzy hair and goofy face. They use them to make wishes, like making the cheerleading squad, having a certain boy like you, and the one that really irked me…wishing that the field trip to the museum was a trip to the mall.

What’s wrong with a trip to the museum? Is that too science related, and hence, not cool? I love the museum. Seeing the mummies and the dinosaurs. Learning about the planets and seeing the old artifacts. But then I had a telescope and a microscope as a kid, too.

I really don’t want my girl to grow up and think that all she has to do in life revolves around looking good, gossip, and going shopping. But looking at those commercials, that’s what these companies want. To turn her into the typical woman who shops, a good little consumer. It’s going to be a hard battle against society telling her what a girl is supposed to be. I want her to know that she can be anything. An astronaut, a doctor, a physicist, a programmer, etc. Would I be disappointed if she picked a more “traditional” female roll? Or even something I really wouldn’t like her to do, like modeling? No way would I ever *not* support her. But I’d talk to her for sure, find out her feelings, and make sure she was well informed. If she did go into something like that though, it won’t be from her parents influence.

Hubby and I would be over the moon if she ended up being a comic artist. :)

Doctorin’ the Tardis

October 12th, 2006 by Jessika

The new season of Doctor Who is rather good. I really liked the last doctor (9th), and was skeptical about the new doctor. But I had heard many good things about him from people who watched the newest season, and I trusted their judgement.

Not sure if the 10th Doctor is my favorite (Tom Baker will always have a soft spot, and it’s still early in the series), but I will say David Tennant is by far the *sexiest* Doctor. Just my type, with the dark hair & eyes…10 kinds of man-pretty!

Jon Stewart dashes our dreams

October 11th, 2006 by Jessika

Like any of us who got the shirts or stickers (I have one on my car!) actually *seriously* thought they’d run. Still, there was that dash of hope…

Stewart-Colbert ‘08? No way, says comedian
‘Daily Show’ host says campaign t-shirts ‘a real sign of how sad people are’
The Associated Press

Updated: 11:45 a.m. CT Oct 9, 2006

NEW YORK - Those people wearing “Stewart/Colbert ‘08″ T-shirts can stop hoping - Comedy Central’s fake news stars have no intention of making a run for the White House.

Jon Stewart said the T-shirts promoting him and Stephen Colbert “are a real sign of how sad people are” with the state of affairs in the country.

“Nothing says ‘I am ashamed of you my government’ more than ‘Stewart/Colbert ‘08,’ Stewart told an audience Sunday at the New Yorker Festival. He was interviewed by the magazine’s editor, David Remnick.

Stewart, who recently hosted Pakistan’s president, Gen. Pervez Musharraf, on “The Daily Show,” said he’s been trying to get top Bush administration officials to appear. “We have requests in there to everyone including Barney,” Stewart said. “Only Barney replies.” Barney is the president’s Scottish terrier.

Stewart scoffed at suggestions that some people actually get their news from “The Daily Show.”

“There’s no way you could get the news from us,” he said. “I’ve seen the show. It couldn’t happen.”

sadness

October 10th, 2006 by Jessika

Yesterday was Logan’s first day of daycare. It was sad to leave her with strangers! We were lucky in that hubby & his mom were alternating weeks watching her until he had to go back to work full time (he’d be off a week, then work a week). No more!

They said she did very well though, despite being tired from not having good naps. We weren’t surprised at that though, being in a new place and all I’d not sleep well, either. I just have to keep thinking that they’re taking good care of her, and she’s getting lots of interaction with other babies and activities.

Still sucks though. We need to win the lottery so she gets lots of mom & dad time.

How they tempt

October 7th, 2006 by Jessika

When City of Heroes came out, I was all over it! Even got into the Beta testing beforehand. Hubby & I played every day, spending hours on the weekend online. We met some cool people there, and used TeamSpeak to socialize during play. Good times.

For a few reasons, we left the game. So many changes took place on the development end, you had to change your gameplay every time a new issue came into the game. Sometimes it changed the way a character’s main offense/defense was. I got tired of it, and when a few people in our close Supergroup left, I did as well. This was right before City of Villians came out (although I did Beta test that, as well.)

Well, twice since I’ve left they’ve reactivated my account for a free weekend of play. They try to rope you back in! But usually a weekend is enough to satisfy my want of a MMORPG. Until something better comes along, I’ll be sticking to console and some stand alone PC. Still waiting for hubby to get the XBox 360!
