Since the TV in our house is on Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon quite a bit, we see many toy commercials. I half paid attention to them before, noting for a while that girl toys generally suck. Even getting first hand experience when shopping for relatives’ or friends’ kids. Tons of pink, with dolls and kitchen toys abundant.
However, now that I have a daughter, I’m especially paying attention to the commercials. It seems that Bratz and Barbie are the dolls to be had. Remember, fellow chicks, when we were little, and Barbie had a lot of different jobs? I don’t see that any more. It’s all about the accessories. (Yes, it was back then, too. But it just seems more prevalent now.)
The worst offender to me was a commercial for Trollz dolls. Basically the same troll dolls we all remember, with the crazy, fuzzy hair and goofy face. They use them to make wishes, like making the cheerleading squad, having a certain boy like you, and the one that really irked me…wishing that the field trip to the museum was a trip to the mall.
What’s wrong with a trip to the museum? Is that too science related, and hence, not cool? I love the museum. Seeing the mummies and the dinosaurs. Learning about the planets and seeing the old artifacts. But then I had a telescope and a microscope as a kid, too.
I really don’t want my girl to grow up and think that all she has to do in life revolves around looking good, gossip, and going shopping. But looking at those commercials, that’s what these companies want. To turn her into the typical woman who shops, a good little consumer. It’s going to be a hard battle against society telling her what a girl is supposed to be. I want her to know that she can be anything. An astronaut, a doctor, a physicist, a programmer, etc. Would I be disappointed if she picked a more “traditional” female roll? Or even something I really wouldn’t like her to do, like modeling? No way would I ever *not* support her. But I’d talk to her for sure, find out her feelings, and make sure she was well informed. If she did go into something like that though, it won’t be from her parents influence.
Hubby and I would be over the moon if she ended up being a comic artist.
